TEMPLEOGUE SYNGE STREET 3-11 NAOMH BARRÓG 3-11
O'Driscoll looked certain to goal after collecting the ball after Aidan Pepper's shot had rebounded off the crossbar, but Kevin Black in the Synge Street goal pulled off a miraculous save to salvage a deserved point for the hosts.
The thrilling conclusion was a fitting climax to a wonderful match that ebbed and flowed throughout with both sides enjoying pockets of dominance, ensuring neither side gained a stranglehold on events.
Enthralling
That led to an enthralling contest in which the visitors looked the slicker in the early exchanges, and they deservedly held an early two-point lead thanks to scores by Jason Byrne and O'Driscoll inside three minutes.
The hosts responded with an excellent point from a tight angle by Eoin O'Donovan in the seventh minute, and the same player was on hand to convert a facile free three minutes later to reflect the evenness of the fixture on the scoreboard.
O'Donovan's sweet left foot was proving Synger's sole source of scores at this point, and he handed his side the lead for the first time with another classy point in the 13th minute, prior to O'Driscoll restoring parity by the end of the first quarter with a close-in free.
A feature of the match was the wonderful blocking produced by both sides. From one such example Kevin Boland was able to restore Barróg's lead from the counter-attack with, almost inevitably, O'Donovan replying in kind for the hosts.
An excellent point from midfielder Tom Muldoon ensured a narrow lead for Synge Street and it was maintained when full-back Brian Barrett produced a superb block to deny Byrne a certain goal in the 26th minute.
However, the talented full-forward was not to be denied and a surging run from the right wing resulted in a glorious finish from close range, with a late score from O'Driscoll pushing the Kilbarrack lads 1-5 to 0-5 ahead by the interval.
The depth of both panels was highlighted upon the restart with Conor Doyle impressing immediately with a cracking point for Templeogue.
His well-taken goal from an intricate pass by O'Donovan in the 38th minute swung the momentum in Synger's direction.
Another substitute, Keith Conroy of Barróg, levelled matters soon after but the home side had regained the initiative and substitute James Clarke was on hand to flick to the net from Muldoon's delivery 15 minutes from time.
Michael Black and Jason Moriarty exchanged points as the half progressed but, with the game seemingly slipping from Barróg's grasp, O'Driscoll turned adroitly to fire a precise finish beyond the outstretched reach of Kevin Black.
The hosts responded well to this setback with points from the towering David Croke and Doyle.
But these scores looked in vain as Moriarty embarked on a run from midfield which culminated in a sublime finish to the net from eight yards in the 59th minute.
A point from Byrne looked like the insurance score for the visitors but Croke had other ideas as he buried home from close range to hand his side a one-point lead that O'Driscoll nullified by the end of an exceptional contest.
